Whether your child is just starting formal education or you’re considering making a school change for an older student, it’s important to know that your family has choices in your approach to education. While some families value the independence of traditional homeschooling, North Carolina families can also choose a K12-powered online public school. Many families find that online school is the right balance for their educational needs and goals.

NC Online Homeschool Alternative

Eligible North Carolina students can take advantage of the K12 curriculum and all the benefits a public school program provides by enrolling in a tuition-free* K12-powered public school. Students enjoy a personalized learning program and instruction from state-licensed teachers, but because they school online, students can log in to school from any computer with an internet connection. This mobility helps provide some of the scheduling flexibility and convenience North Carolina homeschooling families value.

How does K12-powered online school work?

Students attend online class sessions with their teachers and access daily coursework using K12’s interactive curriculum. Younger students also spend time learning offline, supervised by their Learning Coach—usually a parent or other responsible adult. In the elementary grades, Learning Coaches should plan to spend 4 to 6 hours each school day assisting their student. As students progress to middle school and high school and become more independent learners, the time required for the Learning Coach decreases to 1–3 hours a day. In later grades, Learning Coach tasks also transition away from direct instruction to completing other education-related tasks such as logging attendance and providing guidance when needed.

Students at K12-powered schools often have opportunities to participate in school-sponsored outings and events as well, which gives them a chance to make friends and connect with their school community.
