Why K12?

Mari is part of a military family. They wanted a learning option that would support her mom and be flexible enough to help her work school around medical appointments to focus on her health.

Mari’s schoolwork is a mix of scheduled, live classes called Class Connect sessions and self-guided offline assignments and activities that can be done more at her own pace. Live classes are also recorded so Mari can catch up on anything she might miss with her doctor’s appointments.

A typical day may have her starting with live art and English classes led by her state-certified teachers and then include activities for math and history later. If she gets stuck at all, her mom Hope (also her Learning Coach) is there to help. She can ask the teachers questions in the live classes, via email, or during weekly office hours.

A benefit of schools powered by K12 is that the educational materials—a computer, textbooks, supplies for offline activities, and more—are provided.

Student Schedule

Learning Coaches typically spend between 1 to 3 hours each day with 7th grade and other middle school students providing guidance and oversight.

Part of the goal is to help students become independent learners so they don’t have as much direct support during the school day and can ask for what they need as issues come up.

Curriculum

The number of classes students take varies per grade level and individual. For example, students in 7th grade like Mari typically take between 5–6 subjects each semester, with maybe 2–4 of those requiring scheduled, live classes. Classes can include group work or guest speakers, like the meteorologist Mari got to watch on a recorded science session.

The other subjects are completed via self-guided assignments and skills labs in the K12 interactive online learning system.
In addition to core academic subjects like English, math, science, and social studies, K12-powered schools have a great selection of electives, including career exploration in some middle schools.

Classes schedules may vary considerably based on the individual student and their needs, state, and any special programs.

Mari’s time away from the computer looks like..

Practicing piano, reading, going to the library, playing with her dog Sasha, and hanging out with her family.

Social Time

One of Mari’s favorite social activities is when she gets to see her friends at the military learning co-op.

They do art activities together, exercise at the gym, and catch up on schoolwork they may have left to do for the week. Many families are concerned about how their kids stay social if they’re in an online school. The good news is that being online doesn’t mean kids are disconnected from their peers. Students can connect in their classes, in clubs, and in some cases, at local in-person opportunities.

Mari’s favorite subject is science, and K12 sent a lot of cool supplies for her at-home experiments, even her own microscope!

She loves learning about health, outer space, and most of all, weather. One benefit of the K12 curriculum is that lessons are so interactive and the offline materials for activities that take place off the computer are provided.
