Why K12?

Connor wanted a hands-on learning option where he could take breaks, move around, and use his fidgets to focus while taking the time he needs to finish assignments.

Live Classes and Assignments

Connor’s schoolwork is a mix of scheduled, live classes called Class Connect sessions and self-guided offline assignments and activities that can be done more at his own pace.
A typical day may have him starting with a geology science lesson on his own and then live English and math classes later in the day, led by his state-certified teachers. If he gets stuck at all, his mom Heather (also his Learning Coach) is there to help. He can ask the teacher questions in the live classes, via email, or during weekly office hours.
A benefit of schools powered by K12 is that the educational materials—a computer, textbooks, supplies for offline activities, and more—are provided.

Student Schedule

Learning Coaches typically spend between 1 to 3 hours each day with 6th grade and other middle school students providing guidance and oversight.
Part of the goal is to help students become independent learners so that they don’t require as much direct support during the school day and can ask for what they need as issues come up.

Curriculum

The number of classes students take varies per grade level and individual. Students in 6th grade like Connor typically take between 5–6 subjects each semester, with maybe 2–4 of those requiring scheduled, live classes.

The other subjects are completed via self-guided assignments and skills labs in the K12 interactive online learning system.

In addition to core academic subjects like English, math, science, and social studies, K12-powered schools have a great selection of electives, including career exploration in some middle schools.

Classes schedules may vary considerably based on the individual student and their needs, state, and any special programs.

Connor’s time away from the computer looks like…

Skateboarding to the park, walking his dog Everett, hanging out with mom at work, and playing video games with dad.

Connor has made new friends through LEGO® Club at school.

They do different challenges together like making a hotel or a boat to escape a deserted island. Now, they meet up outside of school too and play video games together.

My Workspace

Check out Connor’s learning workspace.

You can see his desk and all his fidgets that help when he gets anxious. With online school, he can stand up at his desk or take quick dance breaks whenever he needs to move around.

Family Support

Connor’s parents are super supportive of his learning, and doing school online means he can go with them to work if needed and still get his assignments done.

His parents both work full time, but their opposite shifts help them share the oversight role and answer Connor’s questions as they come up. Seeing what his parents do for work gives Connor perspective, too, for his own future career.

Hands-On Activities

Connor really enjoys his science class. He loves collecting rocks, and they’re learning about minerals in the live class sessions.

Plus, he gets to work with hands-on science materials like the mineral kit full of geodes and even a brachiopod fossil.
